Week 7: Sanctification – What It Means to Be Set Apart for God

Expanded Teaching and Practical Application

Story: Martin, Helen, Jordy, and Joanne Embrace Sanctification

Martin had always considered himself a “good enough” Christian. He went to church, prayed occasionally, and tried to do the right thing. But as the family studied Week 7 of the Omega Course, he realized there was more to following Jesus than just being “good enough.”

One evening, Helen shared her thoughts. “Sanctification isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being set apart for God’s purposes. It’s a daily choice to live for Him.”

Martin nodded. “I think I’ve been missing that. I’ve been living for myself more than for God.”

Jordy and Joanne listened intently. “What does that mean for us?” Joanne asked.

Helen smiled. “It means we ask God to help us live in a way that honors Him—whether it’s being kind, telling the truth, or helping others.”

The family decided to take practical steps to pursue sanctification. Martin started his mornings with a prayer of surrender, asking God to lead him throughout the day. Helen began journaling about areas where she needed to trust God more. Jordy and Joanne focused on being kinder to each other and helping around the house without being asked.

One evening, Martin shared a story from work. “I had a chance to share my faith with a coworker today. Normally, I would’ve been too nervous, but I felt the Holy Spirit prompting me to speak up. It was amazing!”

Helen smiled. “I’ve been feeling more at peace, even with all the stress at work. I’m learning to trust God instead of worrying.”

Jordy added, “I’ve been helping Joanne with her homework, even when I don’t feel like it. It feels good to be kind.”

Joanne grinned. “And I’ve been telling the truth, even when it’s hard.”

Martin felt a deep sense of gratitude. “This is what it means to be set apart for God. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about letting Him transform us one step at a time.”

Keys and Tips for Living a Sanctified Life

  1. Surrender Daily: Begin each day by submitting to God’s will.
  2. Renew Your Mind: Replace worldly thoughts with God’s truth.
  3. Flee from Sin: Avoid anything that tempts you to sin.
  4. Pursue Holiness: Strive to live in obedience to God’s Word.
  5. Stay Connected: Pray regularly and fellowship with other believers.
  6. Reflect the Fruit of the Spirit: Let God’s love, joy, peace, and patience be evident in your life.

This story illustrates how Martin, Helen, Jordy, and Joanne embraced sanctification, experiencing the transformation that comes from living a life set apart for God. It’s a powerful reminder that sanctification is a journey, not a destination, and that God is faithful to complete the work He’s started in us.

1. Understanding Sanctification

What is Sanctification?

  • Sanctification is the process of being set apart for God’s purposes and becoming more like Jesus (1 Thessalonians 4:3).
  • It’s a lifelong journey of transformation, not an instant event.

Why Sanctification Matters:

  • It’s God’s will for every believer (1 Thessalonians 4:3).
  • It deepens our relationship with God and reflects His holiness to the world.
  • It prepares us for eternal life with Him.

The Role of the Holy Spirit:

  • The Holy Spirit empowers us to live a sanctified life (2 Thessalonians 2:13).
  • He convicts us of sin, guides us into truth, and produces His fruit in us (Galatians 5:22-23).

2. Practical Steps to Live a Sanctified Life

  1. Surrender Daily: Begin each day by submitting to God’s will and inviting the Holy Spirit to lead you.
  2. Renew Your Mind: Replace worldly thoughts with God’s truth by studying Scripture (Romans 12:2).
  3. Flee from Sin: Avoid anything that tempts you to sin or draws you away from God (1 Corinthians 6:18).
  4. Pursue Holiness: Strive to live in obedience to God’s Word and His commands (1 Peter 1:15-16).
  5. Stay Connected: Pray regularly and fellowship with other believers for encouragement and accountability.

3. The Fruit of Sanctification

What Does Sanctification Look Like?

  • Love: Showing selfless care for others (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).
  • Joy: Experiencing deep happiness in God, regardless of circumstances (Philippians 4:4).
  • Peace: Living with inner calm and trust in God’s plan (Philippians 4:7).
  • Patience: Enduring trials with grace and perseverance (James 1:3-4).
  • Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control: Reflecting God’s character in every area of life (Galatians 5:22-23).

4. Practical Exercises for Week 7

  1. Daily Surrender: Start each day with a prayer of surrender, inviting the Holy Spirit to lead you.
  2. Scripture Meditation: Choose a verse about holiness and meditate on it throughout the week.
  3. Sin Inventory: Reflect on areas of sin in your life and take steps to turn away from them.
  4. Accountability Partner: Share your reflections with a trusted friend or mentor and pray together.

6 Verses for Meditation (One Verse a Day)

  1. Day 1: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:3
  2. Day 2: “But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.” – Romans 6:22
  3. Day 3: “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” – 2 Corinthians 3:18
  4. Day 4: “But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.” – 1 Peter 1:15
  5. Day 5: “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” – Ephesians 4:30
  6. Day 6: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” – Galatians 5:22-23

Reflection Questions

  1. What areas of my life need to be set apart for God’s purposes?
  2. How can I surrender more fully to the Holy Spirit’s work in my life?
  3. What steps can I take to pursue holiness daily?
  4. How can I reflect the fruit of the Spirit in my relationships and actions?

A Strong Prayer to Finish

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for calling me to be set apart for Your purposes. Today, I surrender my heart, mind, and actions to You. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and transform me into the image of Jesus. Help me to flee from sin and pursue holiness in every area of my life. May Your love, joy, peace, and patience be evident in me as I walk in obedience to Your Word. Use me to bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Conclusion:

Week 7 focuses on sanctification, providing practical steps to live a life set apart for God and reflect His holiness. It’s designed to help participants grow in their relationship with God and experience the transformation that comes from surrendering to His will.
