Familiar spirit
The familiar spirit is “the spirit of error.” It manipulates people with false prophecy, false dreams, and false visions. It is a'spirit of mediocre’ (average).
Amongst ‘the holiness code’ God stated to the children of Israel, He commanded them not to turn to mediums and wizards, for by so doing they will become unclean (Lev. 19:31). Also see Deuteronomy 18:10–11. In chapter 20 of Leviticus, verse 6, he said, "'I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people.”
And in verse 27, God commanded that every man or woman who is a medium, wizard, or spiritist be put to death by stoning. Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. Exodus 22:18 KJV
Saul, who had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land, consulted the witch of Endor, a witch who operates by familiar spirit (read 1 Samuel 28:3-25). He consulted with the dead on behalf of the living.
When men who are not sent by God speak, they say a different thing than what God's Word says, for they have no light from God. They do not have the truth (Isa 8:20–21). Horoscope, occult, astrology, necromancy (which is talking to the dead), charmers, mediums, divination, soothsaying, enchantment, and interpretation of omens are all under the influence and control of the familiar spirit. Such things are detestable to the Lord. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist, or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord, and because of these detestable practices, the Lord, your God, will drive out those nations before you. Deut 18:10–12 NIV
How to overcome familiar spirits
The demon-possessed girl in Acts 16 was delivered from a familiar spirit, as Paul rebuked the evil spirit and commanded it to come out of her. People who operate in the negative supernatural with familiar spirits usually believe that they have been given power over such evil spirits—to command and use them as their messengers. Like the demon-possessed girl in Acts 16, who was predicted the future by a familiar spirit, such servants of the devil have 'familiar spirits' from the devil assigned to work as messengers for them.
To overcome the familiar spirit and be totally free from its grip, you must bear “the testimony of Jesus.” The Testimony of Jesus Christ is “The Spirit of Prophecy.” And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the Testimony of Jesus, worship God, for the Testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy. Rev 19:10 KJV
Apostle John bore “the testimony of Jesus” even while banished and abandoned on the island of Patmos (see Rev. 1:9; 1:2).
Every demon and the entire horde of the kingdom of darkness bow to the name of Jesus Christ. The Name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. Prov. 18:10, NIV
In the days of the Old Covenant, the LORD swore by Himself, saying, “By Myself I have sworn; My mouth has uttered in all integrity a word that will not be revoked: Before Me every knee will bow; by Me every tongue will swear. Isaiah 45:23 NIV
The eternal Father has freely bestowed on the Son the name that is above every name, and so, in honour of the name of Jesus Christ, all beings in heaven, on earth, and under earth [the world of the spiritual dead] will fall on their knees. And every tongue [frankly and openly] confesses and acknowledges that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9–11).
God's own Son became our example of humility when He came to earth for His ministry, although he was essentially one with God the Father, possessing the fullness of the attributes that make him God. So, this is why all infernal beings take flight at the sound of the name of Jesus Christ.
