Story: Martin, Helen, Jordy, and Joanne Experience Baptism and the Holy Spirit

Martin had been baptized as a teenager, but it had felt more like a tradition than a life-changing experience. Helen, on the other hand, had never been baptized. As they studied Week 4 of the Omega Course, they both felt a stirring in their hearts. 

“I think it’s time,” Helen said one evening. “I want to be baptized as a declaration of my faith in Jesus.” 

Martin nodded. “I want to recommit to the meaning of my baptism. It’s not just a ritual—it’s a symbol of my new life in Christ.” 

They decided to include Jordy and Joanne in the process. The kids were excited, especially when they learned about the Holy Spirit. “Does that mean we can have superpowers?” Jordy asked, eyes wide. 

Helen laughed. “Not exactly, but the Holy Spirit gives us power to live for Jesus and do amazing things for Him.” 

The family worked with their church to plan a special baptism service. On the day of the ceremony, Martin shared his testimony about recommitting to his faith, and Helen shared hers about taking this step of obedience. Jordy and Joanne watched with awe as their parents were baptized, and they even asked if they could be baptized too when they were older. 

After the baptism, the family gathered at home to pray for the Holy Spirit. Martin led the prayer, “Heavenly Father, fill us with Your Holy Spirit. Help us to hear Your voice and walk in Your power every day.” 

As they prayed, Helen felt a warmth spread through her, and she began to pray in a language she didn’t understand. “I think I just received the gift of tongues!” she exclaimed. 

Martin smiled, feeling a deep sense of peace and joy. “This is just the beginning. Let’s stay connected to God and let His Spirit lead us.” 

Over the next few weeks, the family noticed a change. They felt more connected to God and to each other. Jordy and Joanne started praying simple prayers, asking the Holy Spirit to help them with their fears and struggles. 

One evening, as they sat together after dinner, Martin said, “I’m so grateful for this journey. Baptism and the Holy Spirit have brought us closer to God and to each other.” 

Helen nodded. “It’s a reminder that God is with us every step of the way.”

  3. Plan Your Baptism: Work with your church to schedule and prepare for the ceremony.

2. Receiving the Holy Spirit

Who is the Holy Spirit?

  • The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, sent by Jesus to guide, empower, and comfort believers (John 14:26).

The Role of the Holy Spirit: 

  • Helper: He guides us into all truth (John 16:13).
  • Empowerer: He gives us power to live for Christ and share the Gospel (Acts 1:8).
  • Seal: He marks us as belonging to God (Ephesians 1:13-14).

How to Receive the Holy Spirit: 

  1. Ask in Faith: Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to those who ask (Luke 11:13).
  2. Be Open: Surrender to His leading and be willing to step out in faith.
  3. Expect His Presence: The Holy Spirit often manifests through gifts like speaking in tongues, prophecy, and healing (1 Corinthians 12:7-11).

3. Living a Spirit-Filled Life

What Does It Mean to Be Spirit-Filled? 

  • It means being led and empowered by the Holy Spirit in every area of life (Galatians 5:16).

How to Stay Spirit-Filled:

  1. Pray Regularly: Maintain a consistent prayer life to stay connected to God.
  2. Read Scripture: The Holy Spirit speaks through God’s Word.
  3. Obey Promptings: Follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance, even when it’s uncomfortable.
  4. Fellowship: Stay connected with other believers for encouragement and accountability.

4. Practical Exercises for Week 4

  1. Baptism Preparation: If you haven’t been baptized, take steps to schedule and prepare for it.
  2. Prayer for the Holy Spirit: Spend time in prayer, asking God to fill you with His Spirit.
  3. Journaling: Write down any promptings or experiences you have with the Holy Spirit.
  4. Accountability Partner: Share your reflections with a trusted friend or mentor and pray together.

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of baptism and the Holy Spirit. Today, I declare my faith in Jesus Christ and my desire to follow Him. If I haven’t been baptized, I ask for guidance and courage to take this step of obedience. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit, Lord. Empower me to live for You, to hear Your voice, and to walk in Your truth. Help me to stay connected to You through prayer, Scripture, and fellowship. Use me to bring glory to Your name.
