Week 1: The Promise of the Holy Spirit
Key Lesson: Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit as our Helper and Guide.
The disciples were anxious after Jesus told them He would be leaving. In John 14:16-17, Jesus reassured them, saying,
"And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you."
This promise was meant to comfort and prepare them for the work ahead.
Story of the Disciples Learning Week 1
After Jesus’ resurrection, the disciples gathered in the upper room, still processing everything that had happened. Peter, the bold and outspoken leader, broke the silence:
"What will we do without Him? The Pharisees and Romans are against us, and we’re just fishermen and tax collectors."
Jesus, appearing among them, said, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me, I am sending you." Then He breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit" (John 20:21-22).
Andrew, always practical, asked, "Lord, how will this Spirit help us?"
Jesus replied, "He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance everything I have said to you. He will guide you into all truth" (John 14:26, 16:13).
James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were intrigued. "Will He give us power?" they asked.
Jesus nodded, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8).
Philip, ever the skeptic, said, "But how will we know it’s Him? What will He do?"
Jesus explained, "He will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. He will glorify Me and declare to you the things that are to come" (John 16:8, 13-14).
Bartholomew, known for his honesty, admitted, "I’m still unsure, Lord. How can we trust something we can’t see?"
Jesus smiled, "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed" (John 20:29).
Thomas, who had doubted Jesus’ resurrection, said, "I’ve seen Your power, Lord. If You say the Spirit will come, I believe it."
Matthew, the former tax collector, added, "This Spirit will unite us and help us continue Your work."
Simon the Zealot, who had once been a political revolutionary, said, "We’ll need His guidance to spread Your message of peace."
James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, the quiet ones, nodded in agreement. "We’ll wait for Him, Lord," they said.
As Jesus ascended into heaven, the disciples returned to Jerusalem, filled with hope and anticipation. They spent their days in prayer, reflecting on Jesus’ words and waiting for the promised Helper.
