Module 2: Building the Habit of Exercising the Spirit Daily

Lesson 1: Daily Rituals for Spiritual Fitness

Objective: Learn how to establish simple, consistent daily habits that strengthen and develop your spiritual muscles.

Introduction:

Just like physical fitness benefits from daily exercise, spiritual strength grows through regular, intentional habits. Small daily practices—when committed to—accumulate over time, making us stronger in Jesus.

Key Principles:

  • Start Small: Begin with just 5–10 minutes a day.
  • Be Consistent: Practice daily at the same time to build a habit.
  • Engage Fully: Pray, meditate on Scripture, and worship with focus and sincerity.

Practical Practices to Establish:

  1. Vocal Praise:
    • Sing a praise song or hymn, expressing love to Jesus.
    • Example: Sing “Amazing Grace” or another favorite song.
  1. Scripture Reading & Meditation:
    • Read at least one chapter each day.
    • Think about how it applies to your life—meditate on its message.
  1. Prayer:
    • Confess sins, ask for guidance, and pray for your loved ones.
    • Cover your day, your family, and your community.

Discussion Questions:

  • Which of these practices seems easiest for you? Why?
  • What obstacles might hinder your daily devotion? How can you overcome them?

Activities:

  • Personal Planning: Choose a specific time each morning for your daily devotions.
  • Challenge: Commit for the next 7 days to practice your chosen habits and observe what changes happen in your heart.

Lesson 2: The Power of Calling on the Name of Jesus

Objective: Discover how calling on Jesus’ name regularly strengthens your relationship and spiritual muscles.

Introduction:

Calling on the name of Jesus is a simple yet powerful spiritual exercise. It connects us directly with Him and brings peace, strength, and reassurance.

Biblical Truths:

  • Philippians 2:10: “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow…”
  • Romans 10:13: “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Practical Tips:

  • Morning Wake-up: As soon as you wake up, quietly call Jesus’ name: “Oh, Lord Jesus!”
  • Throughout the Day: Call on His name during challenges or moments of gratitude.
  • Unceasing Prayer: Make it a habit to whisper or think of Jesus’ name often.

Activities:

  • Reminder Setting: Use your phone or notes to set alarms or reminders to call on Jesus at least 10 times daily.
  • Challenge: For one week, maintain this habit and note how it influences your attitude and peace level.

Lesson 3: Fan into Flame — Energizing Your Spirit (2 Timothy 1:6-7)

Objective: Learn how to actively energize and grow your spiritual gifts and character through intentional actions.

Introduction:

Fanning a flame makes it burn brighter—our spiritual lives need similar attention. Paul encouraged Timothy to “fan into flame the gift of God,” showing us that strength and fire come from daily effort.

Key Points:

  • Fan into Flame: Regularly renew your devotion and commitment to God.
  • Activate Your Gifts: Engage in prayer, meditation, and service to energize the Spirit within.
  • Surround Yourself with Faith: Read Scripture, meditate on promises, and speak out truth to keep your spiritual fire alive.

Practical Steps:

  1. Daily Affirmation:
    • Voice your love for Jesus.
    • Ask the Holy Spirit to fill and empower you each morning.
  1. Actively Practice:
    • Seek opportunities to serve, encourage, or pray during the day.
    • Meditate on Scripture and declare promises aloud.
  1. Stay Focused:
    • Use a journal or app to remind yourself of ways to energize your Spirit.

Activities:

  • Create a Reminder: Write a note or set an alarm to prompt you to “Fan Your Spirit” each day.
  • Reflect: Keep a simple journal of moments when you sensed the Spirit energizing or leading you.

Summary of Module 2:

  • Establish daily routines—praise, Scripture, prayer—to build your spiritual muscles.
  • Call on Jesus’ name regularly to deepen your connection and find strength.
  • Actively energize your Spirit through intentional practice—fanning the flame daily keeps your faith alive and vibrant.

The Harris Family’s Daily Spiritual Revival

One Monday morning, Steve sat down with Nancy and their three children—Ethan, Lily, and Noah—and shared a recent insight he had learned from the church. “You know,” he said, “spiritual strength isn’t just something we have; it’s like a muscle that needs daily exercise. Paul reminded us to fan into flame the gifts of God in us — and that takes intentional effort every day.”

Nancy nodded. “And calling on Jesus’ name is powerful—it’s like fueling the fire of our Spirit. When we do that regularly, it helps us stay close and strong.”

Ethan, excited, said, “So, if I pray and call on Jesus more each day, I can be a better friend and helper at school?”

Nancy smiled. “Exactly. The more we call on Him, the more His Spirit will grow in us—His fruits like love, patience, and kindness will become more natural.”

They agreed to start a new daily routine. Each morning, they would spend a few minutes praising Jesus, reading a Bible verse, and praying—calling on His name in their hearts and aloud. They also decided to ask the Holy Spirit to energize their gifts—like encouragement to comfort others, wisdom for decisions, or patience with each other.

That week, Ethan made a card to cheer up a classmate feeling sad. Lily shared a comforting Scripture with her friend who was anxious. Noah helped Nancy prepare dinner, showing kindness and hospitality. Each act was a way of exercising their gifts and letting the fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, kindness—grow in their hearts.

One evening, Nancy reflected, “As I call on Jesus and meditate on His Word, I notice I’m more patient with the kids, and I speak words of blessing more easily—those are the fruits of the Spirit shining through.”

Ethan added, “When I pray for my friends and ask the Holy Spirit to help me, I feel more confident and kind. It’s like my Spirit gets stronger every day.”

Steve said, “Paul told Timothy to fan into flame the gift of God—that’s what we’re doing. When we focus on calling on Jesus and nourishing our spirits each day, we grow in the fruits and gifts of the Spirit, and our lives become more like Jesus.”

Over time, the family saw remarkable changes. Their love became deeper, patience more enduring, and their willingness to help and serve increased. The fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience—became natural responses, and their spiritual gifts—encouragement, wisdom, mercy—were more active in serving others.

One evening, Nancy gathered her family and prayed, “Lord, thank You for the gifts and fruits of the Spirit You’ve given us. Help us to fan our Spirit into flame daily, calling on Your name and growing stronger in You. Make our lives a reflection of Your love and power.”

From that day, the Harris family made calling on Jesus and energizing their spirits part of their daily life. They understood that consistent effort, combined with the fruits and gifts of the Spirit, was the secret to a vibrant, victorious Christian walk—day by day, growing closer to Christ and more like Him in everything they did.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Which fruits of the Spirit do you feel are the strongest in your life? Which ones do you want to grow more?
  2. How can calling on the name of Jesus each day help you exercise the gifts God has given you?
  3. What are some simple ways you can build a daily habit to energize your Spirit—like praising, praying, or meditating on God's Word?
  4. Can you think of a time when calling on Jesus or exercising the Spirit’s gifts helped you face a challenge?
  5. What specific gift of the Spirit do you believe God wants to develop most in you right now? How will you cultivate it daily?

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the wonderful gifts and fruits of Your Spirit that You have given us. We are grateful that You have made us vessels of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Help us, Lord, to fan into flame the gift You’ve placed in us through daily prayer, calling on Your name, and meditating on Your Word. Fill us with Your Spirit each day so that the fruits of the Spirit may grow strong in our lives and be evident to everyone around us.

Teach us to be diligent in our spiritual training, remembering that building our Spirit is a journey—day by day, moment by moment. Let us be words, actions, and attitudes that reflect Your love and power, and equip us to serve others with the gifts You have blessed us with.

We love You, Jesus, and want to walk closely with You every day. Thank You for empowering us to be more like You in all we do.

In Jesus’ name, we pray.
Amen.
