Story: The Call to Follow Jesus and the Power of Relationship (John 1:43-51; Acts 1:8)

Early in their journey, Philip and Bartholomew met Jesus and their lives were forever changed. Jesus didn’t just call them to follow; He invested in their spiritual growth, building trust through personal relationships. Philip, excited and eager, immediately wanted his friend Nathanael to meet Jesus, saying, "We have found the one Moses wrote about" (John 1:45).

When Philip brought Nathanael to Jesus, Jesus showed genuine interest—not just in Nathanael’s potential but in building a relationship of trust. Jesus spoke to Nathanael directly, affirming his character and opening his heart. This encounter exemplifies how Jesus built trust and created space for growth, both in individuals and in a collective mission.

Later, after Jesus’ resurrection, He commissioned the disciples with the Great Commission (Acts 1:8). The disciples were instructed to be witnesses, not just individually but as a community—a collective with shared purpose. Jesus’ approach taught them that effective mentoring in mission stems from building trusting relationships, creating space for both personal and missional growth, and encouraging action that flows from faith.

What they learned about the Heart of Mentoring:

  • Building Trust: Jesus’ personal interactions—like with Nathanael—showed the importance of genuine relationship. Mentoring begins with trust, which fosters openness and vulnerability.
  • Creating Space for Growth: Jesus met people where they were, addressing doubts and questions, and gently guiding them toward spiritual maturity. He encouraged them to see beyond their limitations and to think missionally.
  • Encouraging Missional Thinking and Action: Jesus inspired His disciples to think beyond themselves, calling them to be witnesses and actively participate in His mission. His example showed that mentoring isn’t just about teaching; it’s about empowering others to act on their faith.

Reflection:

The disciples learned that the heart of mentoring in missions is relational—trust, patience, and encouragement are essential. By creating safe spaces for growth and guiding others toward missional action, they followed Jesus’ model of loving, intentional mentorship that transforms lives and advances God’s kingdom.

1. Build Genuine Relationships

  • Prioritize authentic connections rooted in trust and love. Trust forms the foundation for effective mentoring and mission.

2. Create Safe Spaces for Growth

  • Foster an environment where mentees feel safe to ask questions, admit doubts, and grow spiritually and missionaly without judgment.

3. Practice Active Listening

  • Listen attentively to understand your mentee’s perspectives, struggles, and dreams. Show genuine interest and empathy.

4. Encourage Missional Thinking

  • Inspire mentees to see beyond themselves and embrace their role in God's mission. Challenge them to think proactively about how they can live out their faith in action.

5. Lead by Example

  • Demonstrate integrity, love, and commitment in your actions. Your life should reflect the heart of Christ and inspire others.

6. Invest in Personal Development

  • Regularly evaluate your own spiritual health and leadership. Growth in your character and faith enables you to mentor effectively.

7. Create Opportunities for Action

  • Motivate mentees to step out in faith—whether through service, evangelism, or outreach. Provide opportunities for practical missional engagement.

8. Provide Accountability with Grace

  • Gently hold mentees accountable, helping them stay focused on their spiritual and missional goals, while extending grace when they stumble.

9. Cultivate a Vision for Mission

  • Help mentees understand their unique calling and purpose in God's kingdom. Align mentoring relationships with broader mission goals.

10. Pray Together

  • Regular prayer builds spiritual intimacy, provides guidance, and aligns your mentoring journey with God’s purposes.

6 Verses for Meditation (One Verse a Day)

1. John 15:12-13

"My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." 

Reflection:
Genuine mentoring in mission stems from authentic love. Leading with sacrificial love models Christ’s heart, creating trust and inspiring others to follow His example.

2. 2 Timothy 2:2

"And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others." 

Reflection:
Effective mentoring involves intentional investment in others, empowering them to grow and pass on their faith. Building a legacy of discipleship multiplies the impact of your mentoring.

3. Matthew 28:19-20

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." 

Reflection:
Mentoring in mission is rooted in obedience to Jesus’ Great Commission. It involves guiding others toward active obedience and intentionally participating in God's global mission.

4. Acts 1:8

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 

Reflection:
Empowered by the Holy Spirit, mentoring should always be missional—encouraging mentees to be witnesses in their spheres of influence and beyond. Dependence on the Spirit fuels effective mentoring.

5. Romans 12:10

"Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves." 

Reflection:
Heart-centered mentoring involves devotion and humility. Putting others first and honoring each person fosters a relational atmosphere where spiritual growth thrives.

6. Ephesians 4:15

"Speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ." 

Reflection:
Mentoring requires speaking with truth and love, nurturing maturity in others. Leading with love and honesty helps mentees grow into Christ’s likeness as part of His body.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I come before You with a humble and receptive heart, seeking to learn and embody the true heart of mentoring in Your kingdom. Thank You for the example of Jesus, who modeled love, patience, and sacrificial service in mentoring His disciples and calling us to carry His mission forward.

Lord, I ask for Your Holy Spirit to fill me afresh. Cultivate in me a heart that genuinely loves others—one that is compassionate, patient, and willing to invest in their spiritual growth. Help me to build trusting relationships grounded in integrity and authenticity, where others feel safe to share, grow, and be held accountable.

Jesus, You are the ultimate example of a servant leader who put others first. Help me to lead with humility, to listen with understanding, and to encourage missional living. May I always see those I mentor through Your eyes, valuing their unique gifts, and inspiring them to walk boldly in their calling.

Holy Spirit, empower me to create spaces for growth where transformation can occur—spiritually, relationally, and in mission. Help me to inspire others to see beyond themselves and to step into Your global purpose with courage and zeal.

I surrender my fears, pride, and complacency at Your feet. Fill me with Your love, wisdom, and courage to be a faithful mentor, passionate about making disciples and advancing Your mission on earth.

And may everything I do be for Your glory, that others may come to know Your love and truth through my example and mentorship.
