Story: The Call to Servant Leadership (John 13:1-17)

After spending months traveling with Jesus, Thomas, Matthew, and the others had seen His teachings and His miracles. Yet, a profound lesson on mentorship and leadership was about to be deeply imprinted in their hearts.

One day, Jesus gathered His disciples for a special moment of teaching. Knowing that soon He would leave them, Jesus wanted to leave a clear model of leadership that would last forever.

As they sat together, Jesus did something surprising. He took off His outer garments, wrapped a towel around His waist, and began to wash the disciples’ feet—an act reserved for the lowest servant. Thomas, who often doubted and questioned, was amazed to see the Lord stooping in humility to serve.

What Jesus Taught: 

  • Humility in Leadership: Jesus demonstrated that true mentorship is rooted in humility. Instead of asserting His authority, He chose to serve, showing that top-down leadership isn’t the model of His kingdom.
  • Patience and Personal Care: Jesus patiently washed each disciple’s feet, including ones like Peter who initially resisted, exemplifying patience and personal attention in mentoring.
  • Intentionality: The act was deliberate and purpose-driven—designed to teach the disciples that greatness in God's kingdom is about serving others, not exerting authority.

When Jesus finished, He looked at the disciples and said, "Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet" (John 13:14).

From this, Thomas and Matthew saw firsthand that leadership modeled by Jesus is relational. It’s about humble service, patience, and intentional love—principles that would shape their future leadership after His resurrection.

Lesson for us:
Jesus’ example teaches us that to mentor others effectively, we must lead with humility, patience, and love—serving others just as He did. His mentorship was relational and sacrificial, inspiring lasting trust and character in His followers.

Story: Jesus Cleanses the Temple (John 2:13-16; Matthew 21:12-13)

One day, Jesus went to the temple in Jerusalem, expecting to find it a place of worship and prayer. Instead, He saw people turning it into a marketplace—selling animals, exchanging money, and making a profit in what was meant to be a house of prayer.

Deeply moved by the injustice and disrespect shown to His Father’s house, Jesus took action. He made a whip out of cords and drove out all the merchants and money changers. He overturned tables, scattered their coins, and gently but firmly cleared the temple of corruption and greed.

What the disciples learned about Jesus’ leadership:

  • Integrity and Zeal for God’s House: Jesus demonstrated that leadership is driven by passion for righteousness. It wasn’t enough for Him to speak against injustice—He acted decisively to restore the temple’s true purpose as a place of worship.
  • Boldness Without Compromise: Jesus showed courage in confronting wrongdoing head-on, even when it meant challenging the status quo or upsetting powerful interests. True leadership involves standing firm in truth and righteousness.
  • Leading by Example: Jesus didn’t just give orders; He modeled what it means to be passionate and zealous for what is right. His actions showed His disciples that integrity and commitment to God's standards are essential qualities of leadership.
  • A Heart for Worship and Holiness: Jesus’ concern wasn’t just about removing corruption but restoring the spiritual purpose of the temple. He taught His disciples that authentic leadership involves guiding others toward genuine worship and spiritual integrity.

Reflection:

The disciples saw that Jesus’ leadership was rooted in love for God and His people. It was characterized by courage, boldness, and a deep commitment to righteousness. His action in cleansing the temple revealed that true leaders stand for integrity and inspire others to pursue holiness and purpose.

1. Lead with Humility

  • Follow Jesus’ example of humble service. True mentorship begins with a sacrificial attitude, putting others’ needs before your own.

2. Practice Patience

  • Display patience in guiding others, understanding growth takes time. Jesus was patient with His disciples’ doubts and mistakes.

3. Be Intentional in Relationships

  • Purposefully invest in others’ lives, build trust, and aim to develop their spiritual and leadership maturity, just as Jesus did with His disciples.

4. Show Genuine Love and Compassion

  • Leading like Jesus involves caring deeply for others, demonstrating kindness, and compassion in every interaction.

5. Model Character and Integrity

  • Your actions must reflect your teachings. Be authentic and consistent in your character, inspiring trust and respect.

6. Prioritize Servanthood

  • Always seek opportunities to serve others rather than dominate or control. Jesus’ leadership model centers on serving others.

7. Use Relational Teaching Methods

  • Teach through example and personal interaction, not just words. Jesus often used stories, personal care, and hands-on actions to instruct.

8. Focus on Character Development

  • Invest in elevating the spiritual maturity and moral integrity of those you mentor, helping them develop Christlike character.

9. Remain Dependence on the Holy Spirit

  • Rely on God’s Spirit to guide, strengthen, and empower you as a mentor. Jesus depended fully on the Holy Spirit in His ministry.

10. Always Point to the Father

  • Model humility and dependency, pointing others to God’s glory and fostering a Christ-centered perspective in leadership.

1. John 13:14-15

3. Matthew 11:29

"Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."

Jesus invites us to learn from Him—His gentleness and humility are key qualities of a Jesus-like mentor. Cultivate these traits in your interactions with others.

4. Luke 22:27

"For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves."

Reflection:
Leading like Jesus means choosing to serve rather than seek status. Embrace a servant’s mindset, especially in leadership roles, reflecting Christ’s humility.

5. John 15:5

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."

Reflection:
Dependence on Jesus empowers us to mentor effectively. Stay rooted in Him; His strength and guidance are essential in modeling Christlike leadership.

6. 2 Corinthians 13:11

"Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you."

Reflection:
Jesus’ model of mentorship emphasizes relational harmony, encouragement, and unity. Aim to foster environments where others grow in love and peace, reflecting Christ’s character.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I come before You with a humble heart, acknowledging that Jesus is the ultimate example of true mentorship. Thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, who led with humility, patience, and love—serving others selflessly and pointing always to You.

Lord, I ask for Your Holy Spirit to guide me as I seek to learn from Jesus how to be a faithful and effective mentor. Fashion my heart after His, cultivating humility and a servant’s attitude in everything I do. Help me to model patience and compassion, even when it’s difficult, and to approach others with genuine love and care.

Teach me to depend wholly on You, remaining rooted in Your Word and Spirit, so that my leadership reflects Christ’s character. Break any pride or selfishness within me, and fill me with the humility to serve others wholeheartedly, just as Jesus did.

Jesus, I desire to imitate You—your kindness, your patience, your intentionality, and your sacrificial love. Empower me to lead others with integrity, authenticity, and a focus on their spiritual growth. Let my actions always point others toward You, so they may see Your love through my life.

Heavenly Father, make me a mentor who reflects Christ’s image—one who builds up, encourages, and shepherds others in Your truth. Use me to impact lives for Your kingdom, and help me always remember that true mentorship is about serving others as Jesus served us.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, trusting You to transform my heart and guide my steps as I learn to lead like Him.
