Week 9: Encouragement and Support

  • Scripture Focus: 1 Thessalonians 5:11
  • Parable: The Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) - Encouraging talents and abilities.
  • Story: A parent supports a child’s unique talents.
  • Reflection: How can you better support your children's strengths?
  • Prayer: Pray for insight into your children's gifts and how to nurture them.

Story: Tracy and Nathan’s Journey to Support Their Child’s Talents

Tracy and Nathan had two children, Olivia and Ethan. As their children grew, they loved to see each personality blossom—Olivia with her artistic flair and creativity, and Ethan with his enthusiasm for sports and teamwork. But like many parents, they often got caught up in daily routines—homework, chores, and academic pressures—and sometimes overlooked their children’s special talents.

One weekend, during a family dinner, Tracy reflected on a sermon she had heard about the parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30). She realized that just as the master entrusted his servants with talents, God had given her children gifts and abilities for His glory. She was convicted that her role was to nurture these talents, encourage them, and help her children develop their God-given gifts, rather than focusing solely on discipline or weaknesses.

The following week, Tracy and Nathan made a conscious choice to be more intentional. They began by observing Olivia’s interests and praising her artistic skills—encouraging her to keep exploring her creativity. They signed her up for a local art class, bought her supplies, and set aside time to sit with her while she painted, showing genuine support and encouragement.

For Ethan, they recognized his love for sports and his knack for teamwork. They signed him up for a soccer league, kept track of his games, cheered him on, and praised his effort regardless of the results. They also encouraged him to work alongside friends and develop leadership skills.

They celebrated every small victory—Olivia’s first successful painting, Ethan’s teamwork on the field, or just his effort to do better. They learned that encouragement builds confidence and joy. They understood that supporting their children's interests and strengths, rather than pressuring them to excel at everything, helped their talents flourish.

Over time, Olivia’s passion for art grew, and she started entering competitions. Ethan began to see the value of teamwork, becoming more supportive and encouraging toward others. Tracy and Nathan observed how genuine encouragement and active support transformed their relationship with their children—they felt more connected, and their children responded with confidence and joy in their gifts.

They realized that each child has unique talents from God. It’s our calling as parents to nurture, encourage, and celebrate those God-given gifts. Their home became a place of learning and growth, full of praise and support. The children grew into confident, motivated individuals who knew they were loved and valued for who they are, not just what they achieve.

Keys and Tips for Parenting: Teaching Encouragement and Support

Prayer for Parenting with Encouragement and Support

Heavenly Father,
We come before You with grateful hearts, thankful for the precious gift of our children and the responsibility You’ve entrusted to us to raise them in Your love. We recognize that parenting isn’t just about discipline or guidance — it’s also about encouragement, support, and building up their confidence in You.

Lord, we ask for Your strength and wisdom. Help us to speak words of life that uplift and motivate our children. Fill our hearts with patience and kindness so that our words and actions always reflect Your love. Teach us to affirm and encourage our children in their strengths, passions, and unique talents.

Remind us to listen with empathy—truly hearing their fears, hopes, and needs—and to respond with compassion. Help us to be present in the moment, offering support and encouragement that builds their faith and confidence.

Lord, give us the ability to see beyond their mistakes or setbacks and instead focus on their potential and worth in Your eyes. Teach us to support them through challenges, to teach perseverance, and to instill resolve rooted in Your promises.

We pray that our encouragement will strengthen their spirits, help them grow in love and faith, and remind them that they are valued beyond their achievements. Let our words and support serve as a beacon of Your unwavering love and grace in their lives.

Fill us daily with Your Spirit so that we may be loving encouragers, supporting our children into becoming the people You created them to be. May our home be a place filled with Your peace, hope, and encouragement for all who dwell within.

In Jesus’ name, we pray,
Amen.
