Week 3: Demons & Deliverance – What Most Churches Don’t Talk About
Martin’s Story: Breaking Free
Martin had always been skeptical about the idea of demons. He believed in God and Jesus, but the thought of spiritual warfare felt too extreme. However, over the past few months, he’d noticed strange things happening in their home. Jordy, their 10-year-old son, had been having nightmares almost every night. Joanne, their 8-year-old daughter, had become unusually irritable, lashing out at the smallest things. Even Helen, usually the calm and steady one, had been struggling with anxiety and unexplainable fear.
One evening, after another sleepless night due to Jordy’s nightmares, Martin decided to bring it up during their family Bible study. “I don’t know what’s going on,” he admitted, “but it feels like there’s something… off. Like we’re under attack.”
Helen nodded. “I’ve been feeling it too. Maybe it’s time we talk about what the Bible says about spiritual warfare.”
They opened their Bibles and read Ephesians 6:12: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness.”
Jordy looked up, his eyes wide. “So, you’re saying there are real demons?”
“Yes,” Helen said gently. “But the good news is, Jesus has given us authority over them. We don’t have to be afraid.”
Martin felt a mix of relief and conviction. “I think we’ve been ignoring this for too long. Let’s pray and ask God to help us.”
The family knelt together in their living room. Martin began, “Heavenly Father, we come to You in the name of Jesus. We renounce any fear, anxiety, or sin that’s been giving the enemy a foothold in our lives. We command every demonic influence to leave our home and our family right now.”
Helen continued, “Lord, fill us with Your Holy Spirit. Cover us with Your protection and peace. Help us to walk in Your light and authority.”
Jordy and Joanne joined in, their small voices trembling but determined. “Jesus, we trust You. Please keep us safe.”
As they prayed, Martin felt a tangible shift in the atmosphere. The heaviness that had been hanging over their home seemed to lift. Jordy looked up and said, “I feel… lighter.”
Over the next few days, the changes were undeniable. Jordy’s nightmares stopped, and Joanne’s irritability faded. Helen’s anxiety was replaced with a deep sense of peace. Martin, once skeptical, became a firm believer in the power of spiritual warfare.
One evening, as they sat together after dinner, Martin said, “I can’t believe I used to think this wasn’t real. God has shown us so much through this.”
Helen smiled. “It’s a reminder that we’re not alone in this battle. Jesus is with us, and He’s already won.”
1. The Reality of Demonic Influence
What Are Demons?
- Demons are fallen angels who serve Satan and seek to deceive, oppress, and destroy (Ephesians 6:12).
- They operate in the spiritual realm but can influence the physical world.
How Demons Operate:
- Deception: They twist truth and lead people into sin (John 8:44).
- Oppression: They cause emotional, mental, and physical distress.
- Strongholds: They establish patterns of sin and bondage in a person’s life.
Why This Matters:
- Ignoring the reality of demons leaves believers vulnerable to their attacks.
- Understanding their tactics equips us to resist and overcome them.
2. The Authority of the Believer
Our Authority in Christ:
- Jesus has given believers authority over all the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19).
- We can resist demons, break their influence, and walk in freedom.
How to Exercise Authority:
- Pray Boldly: Use the name of Jesus to command demons to leave (Mark 16:17).
- Speak Scripture: Declare God’s Word to counter demonic lies (Matthew 4:1-11).
- Live in Holiness: Avoid giving demons a foothold through sin (Ephesians 4:27).
3. Steps to Deliverance
Recognizing the Need for Deliverance:
- Persistent sin, unexplained fear, chronic illness, or irrational anger can indicate demonic influence.
Seeking Deliverance:
- Repent and Renounce: Confess and turn away from any sin or agreements with darkness.
- Pray for Deliverance: Ask God to break the enemy’s hold and fill you with His Spirit.
- Seek Support: If needed, seek help from a trusted pastor or deliverance minister.
Maintaining Freedom:
- Stay rooted in Scripture, prayer, and fellowship with other believers.
- Guard your heart and mind against lies and temptations.
4. Practical Exercises for Week 3
- Prayer of Deliverance: Spend time in prayer, asking God to break any demonic influence in your life.
- Scripture Declarations: Write down verses about God’s authority and declare them daily.
- Identify Strongholds: Reflect on areas of recurring sin or struggle and pray for freedom.
- Accountability Partner: Share your reflections with a trusted friend or mentor and pray together.
6 Verses for Meditation (One Verse a Day)
- Day 1: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” – James 4:7
- Day 2: “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.” – Luke 10:19
- Day 3: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness.” – Ephesians 6:12
- Day 4: “And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons.” – Mark 16:17
- Day 5: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” – John 10:10
- Day 6: “But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.” – 2 Thessalonians 3:3
Reflection Questions
- Have I experienced areas of persistent struggle that might indicate demonic influence?
- How can I exercise my authority in Christ to resist the enemy?
- Are there any sins or agreements with darkness that I need to renounce?
- How can I stay rooted in God’s truth to maintain my freedom?
A Strong Prayer to Finish
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving me authority over all the power of the enemy. Today, I renounce any sin or agreement with darkness in my life. I command every demonic influence to leave in the name of Jesus. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and cover me with Your protection. Help me to stay rooted in Your Word and to walk in the freedom You’ve given me. Use me to bring Your light and deliverance to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Conclusion:
Week 3 equips participants to understand and overcome demonic influence through the authority of Christ. It provides practical steps for deliverance and maintaining freedom, ensuring believers are prepared to resist the enemy and walk in victory.
